Earlier this month, the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) held its awards ceremony to recognize the achievements of marketers in 2015. The awards acknowledge and celebrate the best and brightest talent in the direct marketing industry this year.

MLM Recruiting and Closing

If you want to become better at something. For example, when I wanted to become better at speaking, I enrolled at Toastmasters. I went to college and I enrolled in speaking classes. I invested in my education. That would be number one. You could say, Ray, there’s a lot of free stuff out there. There’s a lot of free training. That’s fine, that’s great. I do consume some free training but when I find a trainer that I like, I want their structure. I want their structured training instead of a little snippet here or there.

Number two, invest your time, to A, go through those courses, and B, get out into the field. There is no one, not one person, that read 67 e-books on how to ride a bicycle and got up on that bike and just rode around, right? There’s no one that downloaded 6 courses on swimming and said, “Hmmm, I think I’ve got it,” and jumped in and just started being an Olympic swimmer, right? Nobody. You got to get some practice.

If you just suck at talking to people, your heart’s going to beat like crazy, skin’s going to heat up a little bit, you’re going to feel a bit uncomfortable and you’re going to have that stuff happen. You can’t practice in a temple and then come out in the real world and just be amazing. It is a combination. It is investing your time, your energy, and possibly money to improve those areas of your life, getting out there and getting your jersey dirty.

My suggestion when it comes to closing is to not have that addiction to the outcome. I read some negotiation books years ago by Herbert Cohen. Herbert Cohen says, “In negotiating, you want to care but not that much.” I don’t get so hung up when someone tells me no. I don’t get so hung up if someone doesn’t do what I wanted them to do. This reminds me a lot of times people say, “Ray, I suck at closing, should I buy leads?” The answer is, “Well, that depends on what you’re hoping to get out of those leads.” If you’re hoping for experience, then buy away. If you’re hoping for massive results then you got the wrong idea.

In the beginning, you got to do what you got to do. You got to do what you got to do with whatever you have. If you have to buy leads, buy leads. If you suck at closing, you’re not going to close very many of them, but it will give you great experience. When I was 18 years old, I was working at a telemarketing company, making 450 calls a day, selling long-distance. They provided the leads, so I wasn’t going and finding 450 leads a day. It was a Davoc system, so as soon as you hung up the phone, you picked it right back up.

MLM Tips on Working with and Inspiring Customers

First of all you need to understand that it IS NOT bad to have people dedicated to promoting the product. You want to be very very careful making someone who’s promoting the products feel bad. Be very careful because you just might upset the apple cart and then you find out they’re not promoting the products or anything and you’ll sure miss those guys.

In my last network marketing company, and in any marketing company before that, the way that I would train, is either you were a juggernaut prospector or you just were lazy! I would get on a training call and my mission was to get everyone to talk to 10 people a day. Anyone on that call. My red personality types were fired up, which by the way, on any given team, there’s about 5% that are red, 5%. The other maybe 10% were like a little motivated. That leaves us with like 85% completely turned off.

In the below video I share my best MLM tips on managing this dynamic while also pulling more people to become business builders. Not only will this help you preserve your existing customers but will also inspire them to involve people in the business.

Here’s the number one thing that needs to be taught about warm market, and that is differentiation. I remember going to a company meeting few years ago and this guy gets up on stage and he says “I recruited the first sixty people I talked to, and here’s what I said.” Everyone, I mean everyone is breaking their necks trying to, “Oh, my God. Magic MLM scripts!”

Because they think that the script is what did it. The script is not what did it. What allowed that person, who is a major trainer, amazing trainer to recruit the first sixty people he talked to is the life he led before he joined. That’s why. That’s what happened.

He had influence, He had authority. He had respect. He had rapport. If you take his magical MLM scripts and you go to your warm market, and you attempt to do what he just taught you and you don’t have respect, you don’t have rapport, you’re not looked up to, you’re not an influencer, you don’t have authority, it isn’t going to work. That’s what you have to understand. Part of being a good warm market recruiter is to recognize where you are. If you don’t have respect, authority, credibility, whatever else, influence, that’s okay. You can still recruit warm market. Heads-up, you’re not going to recruit your first sixty, probably.

In the below video I share some MLM scripts for you even if your warm market does NOT believe in you or think you are awesome or heck barely even like you. The Different Stages of Knowledge of Today’s Network Marketer

We live in an amazing time where we are all connected through technology and we have the power to reach as many people as we want or are willing to put in the effort to.

How has this changed MLM recruiting?

Well, for some, it hasn’t. Some people still aren’t utilizing technology to grow their team while others are thriving. MANY of the MLM recruiting leaderboards across the different companies are filled with those that have mastered how to recruit without prospecting. How?

They learned to create online content that attracts people to them and are recruiting people that reached out to THEM not just people they personally reached out to.

Sounds cool right? But how do you do it?

My MLM Recruiting Plan

Back in 2009 I decided that I wanted to start attracting people to me for my network marketing business that I strongly desired to become the number one income earner in (it worked and I did become the #1 earner in my last company). I started doing two things, one of which is what every network marketing company teaches and the other is something more left to trainers like me to tackle.

The first was I DID prospect like crazy. I have prospected and recruited people from Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, LinkedIn, Meetup.com, TripAdvisor, as well as all the regular places like bars, networking meetings, restaurants, car washes, etc. This is a key concept you need to understand…

You do what you have to do with what you have.

Because I didn’t have leads pouring in each day from my marketing, I HAD to prospect constantly…but I honestly didn’t want to HAVE to do that for the rest of my life, I wanted to create marketing in a way that would attract people to me.

I knew the BEST way to attract people to me was to offer EDUCATION not slick sales funnels or hypey advertisements so I started blogging on this site you are on right now. I started putting out almost daily free content that taught simple concepts around network marketing and it attracted network marketers to me. You may wonder, like many people do, well if you are attracting network marketers aren’t they already happy in their business?

Some are, certainly, but what I now know from doing this for years is there are people that are consuming education around network marketing that aren’t in a company or if they are in a company, they aren’t happy or they are one compensation plan change from leaving that company (unfortunately happens often).

So you see, from creating free content, that educated a particular target market, we were able to attract more people to us and that led to more conversations with people and some of those conversations led to them joining our business.

You DON’T Need to and Probably Shouldn’t Talk about Your Company

When it comes to network marketing online you shouldn’t constantly talk about your company.

Why?

Because it turns some people off and the rest that it doesn’t that genuinely have interest will google it and find some negative blog post or video about it and dismiss it without you ever knowing they were ever interested.

network marketing onlineFocus on lead generation in your marketing. The best way to do that is by creating free content that teaches.

Don’t get me wrong here, you should NOT stop prospecting while you are building your online marketing empire AND this does not happen overnight. We probably went 6 months without getting any serious leads so you probably won’t stop prospecting for quite awhile but the sooner you start creating free content and providing value, the sooner you WILL start generating leads that may lead to signups in your company.

In a quick nutshell, here was my plan:

Prospect like crazy to get my company presentation in front of as many people as possible
Create free content (I prefer blogging but you could do Youtube videos)
In that free content have calls to action to become a lead, preferably with a capture page but if you don’t have one you could simply tell the viewer to email you to connect or connect with you on Facebook
Connect with those leads and see if they are open to my home business
Eventually get to the point where I am generating so many leads from step numbers 2 and 3 that number one becomes optional.

Was this helpful? It IS possible to get MLM recruiting results without non-stop Panera bread and home meetings (not that I am against either) or cold calling IF you are willing to put in some effort and get free content out there that attracts and educates a particular audience. By the way, just because I do this for network marketers does NOT mean you have to, we have clients that blog and create content for the health and wellness niche, dieting, juicing, weight lifting, real estate, etc. Creating content consistently works for any niche in my opinion, in fact I did a free video sharing how to dominate in 19 different markets with free content with exact examples.

In the meantime, assuming you aren’t generating enough leads right now, work on getting better at prospecting and start doing your best at creating content. It isn’t easy but it is worth it. IF you got value from this, drop me a comment below and feel free to share!

Network Marketing Success Starts with Your Mindset

Someone asked, “How do you improve your mindset on a daily basis?”

What I’ve observed is, at a network marketing event, or in a workshop, or on a webinar, or in certain Facebook communities, people show up, and they’re excited, they’re fired up, they’re positive. They’re great people to be around, but they show up very differently to the rest of the world. I’ve seen people that you see them at an event or whatever, nicest, most positive person, and then you see them somewhere that is maybe an unexpected meeting, and they’re yelling at their waiter or waitress, or they’re being mean to their spouse.

Congruency; improving your mindset doesn’t mean improving your mindset while you are on free coaching Friday. It’s pretty easy to be upbeat and positive in this kind of environment, or in a network marketing company convention, or at a workshop, or at a seminar, or on a webinar. That’s pretty simple, because it’s not the real world. The real world is when you’re stuck in traffic. The real world is when you open up the fridge and something falls out and breaks on the floor. The real world is when someone is super mean to you.

The biggest thing that I would suggest that you monitor is the amount of time that you spend down.

When you are in full negative mode, you are unable to see your goals. You can’t see them. You can’t. You cannot see your goals, period. It isn’t enough for you to only be positive and awesome when you’re at your network marketing company convention. That is not enough. You need to work on your daily mindset, period. The next time I want you to create a psychological trigger.

Maybe you think that I just came out of the womb, and I’m just like, “Whatever.” No. Guys, I’ve been the worst of the worst. I was the negative guy. I was cynical, skeptical. The only difference is, I’ve been working at it longer than most people. That’s the difference, and I’ve surrounded myself with mentors. I’ve invested in my education, time, and money, to get better constantly.

How tight are your expectations? How easily do you get frustrated, disappointed, overwhelmed, stressed out, angry? That’s dictating your mindset. These things are going to happen. You’re going to drop eggs. You’re going to drop your coffee. You’re going to spill water. You’re going to go to get up on stage and trip and fall down. These things will happen. It’s the length of time you spend down that is the most important thing for your life.
